IIT-ISM, Dhanbad Celebrates International Day of Light

Dhanbad: IIT-ISM, Dhanbad celebrated the International Day of Light on May 16, 2024, with a series of events organized by the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Student Chapter and the Optica (formerly OSA) Student Chapter. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Light in Our Lives: To Let the Light Guide Us Forward.”

The event, held in the PG Seminar Room of the Department of Electronics Engineering, featured a day-long program including quiz and photography competitions. The activities were conducted by Prefessor Devendra Chack (Faculty Advisor, Optica), Prof. Amitesh (Faculty Co-Advisor), and Prof. Jaisingh Thangaraj (Faculty Advisor, SPIE), in collaboration with student office bearers from both student chapters.

“The International Day of Light is celebrated every year to mark the anniversary of the first successful laser operation in 1960 by physicist Theodore Maiman,” explained Prefessor Chack.

He further added, “The purpose of celebrating this day is to encourage scientific collaboration and explore the possibilities of light-based technologies to promote peace and sustainable development.”

The celebration provided an opportunity for various sectors of society to engage in activities showcasing the contributions of science, technology, art, and culture in achieving UNESCO’s goals, including establishing peaceful societies.

Founded in 1955, the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) is a nonprofit professional society dedicated to optics and photonic technology. Optica, a leading society in optics and photonics, also played a key role in organizing the event.
