Pakistan test-fires ballistic missile with 450-km range amid escalation in tension with India

RNS: In a move likely to intensify already heightened tensions with India, Pakistan announced on Saturday that it had successfully test-fired a surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 450 kilometers.

The missile, identified as part of the Abdali Weapon System, was launched during Exercise Indus, a military drill aimed at evaluating operational preparedness and validating key technical capabilities. According to a statement from the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the test assessed the missile’s advanced navigation system and improved manoeuvrability.

Senior defence officials were present during the launch, which was conducted under the observation of top military leadership.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and Chiefs of the Armed Services later issued statements expressing confidence in the country’s strategic forces. They reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining a credible minimum deterrence and ensuring national security.

The missile test comes in the wake of a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India, which has further strained diplomatic ties. Indian officials have accused Pakistan of provocation, citing repeated ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in the aftermath of the attack.
