10 Years of Digital India: From Startup Boom to 5G Leap, India Leads the Way

PM Modi Calls It a People-Powered Revolution for Aatmanirbhar Bharat

New Delhi :  As India marks 10 years of the Digital India initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed it as a people-led revolution that is driving the nation towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and positioning India as a trusted global innovation partner.

In a special blog post commemorating the decade-long journey, PM Modi described Digital India as more than just a government programme—calling it a mass movement that has shifted the nation’s digital narrative from governance to global leadership, and from India-first to India-for-the-world.

He emphasized the transformation in mindset over the years: “Where once people doubted Indians’ ability to adopt technology, today India leads the world in digital inclusion and innovation.”

Key Highlights Shared by the PM:
Inclusive Transformation: Technology is now narrowing the divide between the privileged and the underserved. “When the intent is right, innovation empowers the weakest,” said Modi, crediting inclusive digital access for real-life changes at the grassroots.

Massive Infrastructure Push: Over 4.2 million kilometres of Optical Fibre Cable—11 times the Earth-Moon distance—now connect India’s remotest villages.

World’s Fastest 5G Rollout: With 4.81 lakh base stations installed in just two years, 5G has reached even forward military posts in Galwan, Siachen, and Ladakh.

Global Recognition of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure: Platforms like Aadhaar, CoWIN, DigiLocker, FASTag, PM-WANI, and One Nation One Subscription are now being studied and adopted globally.

CoWIN powered the world’s largest vaccination drive, issuing over 220 crore QR-verifiable certificates.

DigiLocker now serves 54 crore users and hosts over 775 crore documents.

Startup Boom: With over 1.8 lakh startups, India is now among the top three startup ecosystems globally. Modi described this growth as more than a startup wave—calling it a “tech renaissance.”

India’s AI Leap: With deep talent penetration in AI, India is set to lead in responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence. The $1.2 billion India AI Mission has already enabled access to 34,000 GPUs at less than $1 per GPU hour, making India the world’s most affordable compute destination.

Humanity-First Approach: India’s New Delhi Declaration on AI champions ethical innovation, aligning technology with human values.

Looking ahead, PM Modi said the next decade of Digital India will be even more transformative, promising a future where technology continues to empower every Indian and strengthen India’s global digital leadership.
