Washington D.C.: In a dramatic political move, tech mogul and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the formation of a new political outfit—the America Party—on Saturday, aiming to challenge what he terms the United States’ “one-party system.”
The declaration comes amid a sharp fallout with U.S. President Donald Trump, following Musk’s stint as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he spearheaded cost-cutting measures. Once Trump’s staunchest ally and top donor during the 2024 campaign, Musk has now turned sharply critical of the administration’s economic policies.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

The announcement coincided with the U.S. Independence Day weekend, intensifying its political symbolism. A day earlier, Musk had run a poll on X asking users whether they supported “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” Over 1.2 million users responded.
Tensions peaked after President Trump signed into law a sweeping tax-cut and spending bill on Friday—legislation Musk fiercely opposed, citing negative impacts on federal support for electric vehicles and space exploration. He had warned of launching a political party if the bill passed.
Trump, in turn, reportedly threatened to revoke federal subsidies for Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX—further straining ties between the two former allies.
While Musk has unveiled the America Party in principle, it remains unclear if it has been officially registered with U.S. election authorities or what leadership and structure it will adopt.
