New Delhi: In a stunning revelation, investigators probing Monday’s deadly Red Fort car explosion suspect the hand of a Pulwama-based doctor-turned-bomber, Dr. Umar , who may have triggered the blast after his terror network collapsed.
The explosion tore through a Hyundai i20 near Gate No. 1 of Red Fort Metro Station around 6:50 pm, killing nine people and injuring over two dozen others. The car, registered in Haryana, burst into a massive fireball at a traffic signal, shaking Old Delhi’s historic heart.
CCTV Clue: The Calm Before the Blast
Security footage shows the white Hyundai parked near the Red Fort for almost three hours before the explosion. The driver — believed to be Dr. Umar himself — waited inside until the car detonated.
“Initial findings suggest the blast was triggered internally, not by impact,” said Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha.

From Healer to Killer
Born in 1989, Dr. Umar had completed MBBS from Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar in 2017; was once a medical practitioner in Faridabad, Haryana. Investigators now believe he was part of a three-member terror module with two other doctors — Adeel Ahmad Rather and Mujammil Shakeel — both arrested last week with 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate.
When the module was busted, Umar reportedly went underground, possibly orchestrating the Red Fort car bombing as a desperate final act.
The Trail of the Deadly i20
The car’s registered owner, Salman, told police he sold it months ago. The next buyer, Tariq, a Pulwama resident linked to Umar, allegedly passed it to others before it surfaced in Delhi — loaded with explosives and detonators.
Forensic experts have confirmed ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) were used — the same explosive mix used in Pulwama and Hyderabad blasts.
DNA Test to Confirm Identity
Police have detained Umar’s family members in Pulwama and sent charred remains for DNA testing to confirm whether Umar perished in the blast or escaped.
A Doctor Who Lost His Oath
Once trained to save lives, Dr. Umar Mohammad now stands accused of taking them. Whether he died in the inferno or vanished into the shadows remains a chilling mystery — but the blast has reminded Delhi that terror can sometimes wear a white coat.
