Kolkata: West Bengal has scripted electoral history, recording an unprecedented 92.47% voter turnout in the 2026 Assembly elections — the highest since Independence, according to the Election Commission of India.

The second and final phase of polling, conducted across 142 constituencies, witnessed exceptionally high participation, taking the overall turnout to a record level. Polling began early in the morning and continued amid long queues at booths, reflecting strong voter enthusiasm across both urban and rural regions.

Highest-Ever Participation

Officials confirmed that this is the highest voter turnout ever recorded in the state’s electoral history, surpassing previous benchmarks and setting a new milestone for democratic participation. The surge has been attributed to improved election management, enhanced voter awareness campaigns, and better accessibility at polling stations.

High-Stakes Political Contest

The election saw a fierce contest between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with several key constituencies witnessing intense campaigning and high voter mobilization.

Despite isolated reports of tension and minor disruptions, polling was largely conducted peacefully under tight security arrangements, with central and state forces deployed extensively across sensitive areas.

Women Voters Lead the Way

A notable feature of the election was the strong participation of women voters, who in several constituencies outnumbered male voters. This trend highlights a growing inclusivity in the state’s electoral process and an increasing role of women in shaping political outcomes.

A Strong Democratic Signal

The record-breaking turnout is being seen as a powerful endorsement of democratic engagement in the state. Political observers believe that such an overwhelming voter response could play a decisive role in shaping the final results.

With counting scheduled in the coming days, all eyes are now on the outcome of what is being described as one of the most significant and closely watched elections in West Bengal’s history.

Exit Polls Signal Tight Contest, Conflicting Projections Emerge

Meanwhile, exit polls have presented a sharply divided picture of the likely outcome in West Bengal, underlining the high-stakes nature of the contest.

A P-MARQ exit poll has projected a strong performance for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), placing it ahead in the 294-member Assembly. According to the survey, the BJP could secure between 150 and 175 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 148.

The ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, is projected to win between 118 and 138 seats, indicating a potential decline from its previous tally. Other parties and independents are estimated to secure 2 to 6 seats.

However, a contrasting projection has added a new dimension to the electoral narrative. An exit poll conducted by People’s Pulse suggests a strong lead for the TMC, estimating it could win between 177 and 187 seats, while the BJP may secure 95 to 110 seats.

The divergent forecasts have heightened political suspense, with the final outcome now hinging on the official counting of votes.
