Kerala Gets New CM as Congress Picks V D Satheesan to Succeed Pinarayi Vijayan

News Desk: The Congress on Thursday named senior leader V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Keralam, would lead the state after Pinarayi Vijayan’s tenure. The announcement was made by AICC general secretary and Keralam in-charge Deepa Dasmunsi after consultations within the Congress leadership and the United Democratic Front (UDF).

Satheesan, who served as the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, has long been considered one of the strongest and most vocal faces of the Congress in Keralam politics. His elevation is being viewed as a major generational and strategic shift within the party ahead of the new political phase in the state.

A multiple-time MLA from the Paravur Assembly constituency in Ernakulam district, Satheesan is known for his fiery speeches, aggressive floor strategy and strong command over legislative debates in the Keralam Assembly.

Born on October 12, 1964, Satheesan entered politics through the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress, before steadily rising through the Youth Congress and the state party organisation.

Over the years, he emerged as a key architect of the Congress-led UDF’s campaigns against the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.

Satheesan gained statewide prominence for relentlessly attacking the Vijayan government on issues ranging from corruption allegations and the gold smuggling controversy to governance failures and law-and-order concerns.

After the UDF’s defeat in the 2021 Assembly elections, he was appointed Leader of the Opposition, a role in which he sharpened the Congress party’s political messaging and attempted to rebuild the opposition’s organisational strength across Keralam.

Within the Congress, Satheesan is widely seen as a reform-oriented leader with a relatively clean image and strong grassroots connect. Party insiders believe his appointment could help energise the cadre and consolidate anti-LDF sentiment in the state.

His selection also signals the Congress high command’s attempt to project a younger and more assertive leadership face in Kerala as the party prepares for upcoming political battles in the southern state.
