Bokaro: The vibrant beats and soulful notes of traditional Chhau music filled the air in Chandankiyari on Friday as a three-day ‘Mohuri’ workshop began at the Sangeet Natak Akademi Chhau Centre under the aegis of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The workshop opened on a colourful cultural note with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Plus-Two High School Principal Bhakta Ranjan Mahato, Chhau Centre Coordinator Dr. Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary, Akademi observer Dr. Santosh Prasad and advisory committee members.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Chaudhary underlined the crucial role of the traditional Mohuri instrument in Chhau performances and called for urgent efforts to preserve India’s fading folk and tribal art traditions. He said protecting indigenous cultural heritage has become a major responsibility in today’s rapidly changing social environment. He also echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message on energy conservation, urging participants to adopt fuel-saving and energy-efficient practices in daily life.

The workshop has brought together Chhau artistes and learners from across eastern India, with participants from Odisha, Seraikela and Purulia traditions joining the programme. Around 20 students from nearby government schools are also taking part in the training sessions.

Renowned Mohuri experts Tarzan Garai from Odisha, Jagaru Kalindi from West Bengal and Mihir Lal Mahato from Seraikela are conducting hands-on training and interactive sessions aimed at strengthening the traditional musical backbone of Chhau dance.

The inaugural session also witnessed the presence of noted Chhau personalities, including award-winning Guru Sadhucharan Mahato, advisory committee member Haradhan Mahato and former advisory member Pagulu Jena, who encouraged young participants to carry forward the legacy of the centuries-old folk tradition.

Centre staff members Dilip Jena, Vijay Kumar and Ashutosh Kumar played key roles in organising the event smoothly.
