Hamirpur (UP) | India: At least six people are feared dead after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district amid heavy rainfall and strong winds, triggering a major rescue operation.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a portion of the bridge being built over the Betwa River suddenly gave way. Preliminary reports suggest that relentless rain and stormy weather may have weakened the structure, leading to the collapse.
Several workers were present at the construction site when the accident took place. Eyewitnesses said a loud crash was heard as a section of the bridge came down, trapping labourers under massive concrete slabs and debris. Rescue teams, police personnel, and district administration officials rushed to the site soon after receiving information about the disaster.

Authorities fear that at least six workers may have lost their lives, while several others are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Rescue operations are continuing with the help of heavy machinery and emergency response teams. Officials said efforts are focused on locating and safely evacuating those trapped under the collapsed structure.
The bridge was being constructed to improve connectivity between villages in the region and was considered an important infrastructure project. However, the collapse has raised serious concerns about construction quality, safety standards, and preparedness during adverse weather conditions.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reportedly taken note of the incident and directed district authorities to ensure swift rescue and relief measures. Medical teams have been placed on alert, and the injured are being provided treatment at nearby hospitals.
Officials have ordered an inquiry into the incident to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Investigators are expected to examine whether heavy rainfall alone triggered the accident or if structural deficiencies and safety lapses also played a role.
The tragedy comes at a time when several parts of Uttar Pradesh have been witnessing intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, causing widespread disruption and damage to infrastructure. As rescue efforts continue, concerns remain over the fate of workers still feared trapped under the debris.
