BrahMos, Critical Minerals & Defence: PM Modi’s Indonesia Visit Delivers 20 Major Outcomes

 

Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday conferred Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia, by President Prabowo Subianto, as India and Indonesia elevated their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with a series of landmark agreements covering defence, missiles, critical minerals, maritime security, technology, healthcare and education.

The prestigious award was presented during a ceremonial event at Istana Merdeka, the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, in recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s contribution to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering closer cooperation between the two democracies. Modi dedicated the honour to the people of India, describing it as a tribute to the enduring friendship and shared values of the two nations.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome at the palace, where he and President Prabowo were greeted by children waving the national flags of India and Indonesia.

BrahMos Missile Deal Headlines Strategic Outcomes

The highlight of the visit was the signing of a defence agreement for the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, marking a major breakthrough in India’s defence exports. Indonesia also agreed to expand cooperation on Astra air-to-air missiles, defence industrial collaboration and military exchanges, underscoring growing strategic trust between the two countries.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and agreed to enhance cooperation between their coast guards, promote maritime domain awareness, and deepen collaboration in the blue economy, port development and regional connectivity.

Critical Minerals, Steel and Technology Partnerships

India and Indonesia also signed key agreements aimed at building resilient supply chains for critical minerals, steel and rare earth magnets. As part of the partnership, the Steel Authority of India Limited and Indonesia’s PT Krakatau Steel will establish a joint venture to manufacture stainless-steel slabs in Indonesia.

The agreements further cover cooperation in telecommunications, artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, research, innovation and emerging technologies, reflecting the two countries’ focus on future-ready economic collaboration.

IIM Bangalore to Open Overseas Campus

In a major educational initiative, the leaders announced that Indian Institute of Management Bangalore will establish its first overseas campus in Jakarta, creating new opportunities for management education across Indonesia and the ASEAN region.

The two nations also expanded cooperation in healthcare through regulatory partnerships and workforce training, while India pledged to supply high-quality wheat seeds to support Indonesia’s food security and strengthen collaboration in sustainable agriculture.

20 Major Outcomes Strengthen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Overall, the visit produced 20 major outcomes, including 14 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and six major announcements spanning defence, space, disaster management, agriculture, digital technology, elections, culture and people-to-people exchanges. India will also assist in restoring Indonesia’s UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple Complex, while both countries agreed to commemorate the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore>’s visit to Indonesia as the Tagore–Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy.

Addressing a joint press conference, President Prabowo described India as a trusted strategic partner and welcomed the expansion of bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. Prime Minister Modi said the agreements marked the beginning of a “golden new chapter” in India-Indonesia relations, expressing confidence that the strengthened partnership would contribute to peace, prosperity and stability across the Indo-Pacific.
