Udupi: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Friday laid out nine guiding “mantras” to strengthen India’s self-reliance, urging citizens to actively participate in initiatives that preserve heritage, support sustainable living, and uplift the underprivileged. Speaking to devotees at the historic Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi, he appealed for a collective national effort “beyond ideology and beyond politics.”
The Prime Minister asked people to pledge themselves to water conservation, protection of rivers, and participation in Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam — the nationwide tree plantation drive. He emphasized individual duty in uplifting at least one person out of poverty and boosting the Swadeshi movement to empower Indian enterprises and safeguard the domestic economy.
Modi further encouraged the adoption of natural farming practices, millet-based healthy nutrition, reduced oil consumption, and the mainstreaming of Yoga in daily life. One of the most striking resolutions was the preservation of ancient manuscripts — with Modi stressing that India’s intellectual heritage must be “passed on consciously to the next generation.”
PM Modi’s Nine-point Call for a Self-Reliant India
- Conserve water and protect rivers
- Participate in Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam — plant trees
- Uplift at least one poor person out of poverty
- Promote the Swadeshi movement and support Indian entrepreneurs
- Encourage natural farming practices
- Adopt millet-based healthy food habits
- Reduce oil usage
- Make Yoga part of everyday life
- Preserve ancient Indian manuscripts and heritage knowledge
If every Indian takes even ONE of these… Bharat changes.

He also urged citizens to explore India’s cultural geography by visiting 25 historically and spiritually significant sites, reinforcing the value of cultural memory and traditional wisdom. Modi noted that the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita have inspired numerous central government initiatives, including Ayushman Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, Nari Shakti campaigns, Mission Solar Alliance, and the Sudarshana Chakra national security programme, all rooted in timeless maxims such as Sarvejana Sukhino Bhavantu and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
During the visit, the Prime Minister participated in a ceremonial group recitation of the Gita (Gita Parayana) at the Mutt. He also inaugurated the newly gold-plated Tirtha Mantapa and formally dedicated the gold-plated Kanaka Kindi, the revered opening through which saint-poet Kanakadasa is believed to have once glimpsed Lord Krishna.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi, Dharmastala Dharmadhikari Dr. Veerendra Heggade, and Udupi Puttige Mutt seer Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji were among the dignitaries present. In a symbolic gesture, the Puttige Seer conferred upon Modi the honorific title “Bharata Bhagya Vidhata” — one who shapes the destiny of India.
