Amman: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday set an ambitious economic target for India and Jordan, proposing to double bilateral trade to $5 billion within the next five years, as he wrapped up a landmark two-day visit marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The announcement came at the India–Jordan Business Forum in Amman, attended by King Abdullah II, Crown Prince Hussein, and senior Jordanian ministers overseeing trade, industry and investment. Addressing business leaders from both sides, Modi called for stronger business-to-business partnerships, urging industry to convert shared opportunities into sustainable growth.

Highlighting India’s rapid economic rise, Modi described the country as the fastest-growing major economy, on track to become the world’s third-largest, and invited Jordanian companies to tap into India’s 1.4-billion-strong consumer market, expanding manufacturing base and transparent policy regime. He said India and Jordan could also emerge as trusted supply-chain partners for global markets.
King Abdullah II underlined Jordan’s strategic role as a regional gateway, noting that the country’s Free Trade Agreements, when combined with India’s economic strength, could help create a strategic economic corridor linking South Asia, West Asia and beyond.
Roadmap for a Deeper Partnership
Modi’s visit, held at the invitation of King Abdullah II, culminated in a joint statement outlining a forward-looking roadmap covering trade, technology, connectivity and people-to-people ties. Both leaders reaffirmed the strong foundation of trust and goodwill underpinning bilateral relations and agreed to sustain momentum through regular high-level engagement.
On the economic front, the two sides welcomed the steady growth in bilateral trade, valued at $2.3 billion in 2024, and stressed the need to diversify the trade basket. They agreed to convene the next Trade and Economic Joint Committee meeting in 2026 and identified customs, transport and logistics cooperation as key enablers, leveraging Jordan’s strategic location.
Expanding Cooperation Beyond Trade
The talks also broadened cooperation in digital technology, education, healthcare, agriculture, water management and renewable energy, with several agreements signed to support capacity building, digital transformation and sustainable development.
Cultural ties received a boost through a new cultural exchange programme and a twinning agreement between Petra and the Ellora Caves, aimed at promoting tourism and heritage links.
As the visit concluded, Prime Minister Modi thanked King Abdullah II for the warm hospitality. Both leaders expressed confidence that the outcomes of the visit would deepen the India–Jordan partnership and contribute to peace, prosperity and stability in the region.
