ED Arrests Kolkata Police DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas in Alleged Extortion Syndicate Case

Kolkata DCP Arrested After 10-Hour ED Interrogation

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Shantanu Sinha Biswas in connection with an alleged extortion and money laundering syndicate linked to criminal operator Sona Pappu alias Biswajit Poddar.

The senior Kolkata Police officer was taken into custody late Thursday night after over 10 hours of questioning at the CGO Complex in Kolkata. He is expected to be produced before a court on Friday.

ED Probing Money Laundering Links

Shantanu Sinha Biswas, who earlier served as the Officer-in-Charge of Kalighat Police Station, had been summoned multiple times by the ED during the course of its investigation. However, officials said he repeatedly skipped appearances before the agency.

Following his non-compliance, the ED had reportedly issued a lookout notice to prevent him from leaving the country.

Investigators are probing an alleged criminal-linked syndicate operated by Sona Pappu, with financial transactions and extortion-related activities now under the scanner.

Financial Transactions Under Scrutiny

According to sources, the ED uncovered suspicious financial links between Shantanu Sinha Biswas and associates connected to Sona Pappu.

The officer’s name had also surfaced during the investigation involving businessman Joy Kamdar, who was earlier arrested in the same case over alleged financial dealings.

Officials are examining recovered documents and transaction trails believed to connect several individuals to the wider network under investigation.

ED Had Raided Officer’s Residence

Last month, the ED had conducted raids at the Fern Road residence of Shantanu Sinha Biswas as part of the ongoing probe into the alleged extortion racket.

The arrest marks a major development in the case, which has raised serious questions over alleged links between criminal networks and police officials in Kolkata.
