Abhishek Banerjee Heckled in Sonarpur, Protesters Allegedly Hurl Stones, Eggs and Shoes

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee encountered a hostile reception in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Saturday when a group of locals allegedly protested against him and hurled stones, eggs and shoes during his visit to a post-poll violence-affected area.

The incident reportedly took place in Vivekanandanagar under Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality, where the Diamond Harbour MP had gone to meet the family of Sanju Karmakar, said to be among those affected by post-election violence.

Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media showed protesters raising slogans against Banerjee as tensions flared during the visit. The footage quickly went viral, triggering sharp political reactions.

Reacting to the episode, BJP leader Rakesh Singh said the developments reflected the changing political mood in the state. In a post on social media, he remarked that power is never permanent and that political leaders must ultimately face the consequences of their actions.

The confrontation comes at a politically sensitive time for the Trinamool Congress, which recently suffered a major setback in the West Bengal Assembly elections. In the aftermath of the results, security arrangements outside Banerjee’s south Kolkata residence were reportedly reduced.

West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya condemned the incident, stating that such occurrences have no place in a democracy. He, however, maintained that the BJP had no role in the protests.

The Trinamool Congress had not issued an official response to the incident till the filing of this report.
