CJP’s ‘Cockroach Trio’ Released After Detention, Face 1-Year Peace & Tranquillity Restriction

CJP’s ‘Cockroach Trio’ Released After Detention, Face 1-Year Peace & Tranquillity Restriction

News Desk: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were released from detention on Sunday morning, subject to a one-year condition to maintain peace and tranquillity.

The three leaders were produced before a Special Executive Magistrate at Delhi Cantt on Sunday, a day after Delhi Police detained them at the national capital’s airport. Their release was confirmed by CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh in a post on X.

According to reports, the magistrate imposed conditions restricting the trio from engaging in activities that could breach peace and public tranquillity during the next year. Delhi Police said preventive action had been initiated against them under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Detained Ahead of ‘Jantar Mantar 2.0’ Protest

The CJP leaders were detained shortly after their flight from Mumbai landed in Delhi on Saturday. Police personnel reportedly entered the aircraft and took them into custody amid heightened security arrangements across the national capital.

The detention came ahead of the party’s proposed ‘Jantar Mantar 2.0’ protest, which sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The allegations concerning the voter-list revision have also become a major point of contention between opposition parties and the Election Commission.

Police had reportedly denied permission for the proposed demonstration, citing concerns over compliance with conditions governing previous protests and the notice period required for organising a fresh agitation.

₹50,000 Surety Bond, One-Year Peace Condition

Delhi Police stated that preventive action was taken against Dipke, Ranka and Das on October 10, and that they were produced before the Executive Magistrate Court at Delhi Cantt on October 11.

Their release reportedly followed the furnishing of a ₹50,000 surety bond linked to maintaining peace and good behaviour for one year. The conditions imposed by the magistrate require the leaders to refrain from conduct that could breach peace and tranquillity during this period.

The release marks a significant development in the confrontation over the proposed protest, which unfolded amid an extensive security operation in Delhi. Thousands of protesters and several political figures were also detained at different locations as authorities moved to prevent demonstrators from reaching the protest site.

With the three CJP leaders now released, attention is likely to turn to the party’s next course of action and whether it will pursue its proposed agitation under the prevailing restrictions. The central issue behind the protest remains the controversy over electoral-roll revision and the demand for accountability from the Election Commission.

The latest development has added another chapter to the growing political confrontation over the SIR exercise, with the CJP leadership’s detention and subsequent release bringing the debate over protest restrictions, public order and electoral accountability into sharper focus.
