IIT-ISM alumnus gets ‘Young Scientist Award’

RNS: An IIT-ISM alumnus, Professor Santanu Ghosh, bagged Young Scientist Award at Indian Science Congress in Nagpur. Ghosh, who completed his PhD in Applied Geology in 2021, has made his alma mater proud by winning the Young Scientist Award in Earth System Sciences Section on January 7 during the Indian Science Congress held from January 3 to 7 at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur, informed Ragini Singh, Dean, Media & Branding of ISM.

Professor Ghosh, who is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology of Mizoram University, completed his PhD in 2021 under the Supervision of Atul Kumar Verma, a Professor of Applied Geology of IIT (ISM) and Dr Vinod Atmaram Mendhe, Senior Principal Scientist of Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) on the topic, Optical and Geochemical Paradigms of Coal Metamorphosis from Bituminous to Anthracite with an Assessing Note on Secondary Microbial Methanogenesis from Bituminous Rank.

Professor Ghosh, who completed his Graduation and Post-Graduation in Applied Geology at Presidency College, the University of Calcutta, before pursuing his PhD at IIT (ISM), was awarded the best PhD Thesis award at both the Department and Institute levels for his PhD thesis.

Professor Ghosh, an Occupational Trainee (between May-June 2017) of the University of Queensland, Australia is also a recipient of DST INSPIRE Scholarship Award of the Department of Science & Technology, India, from 2010 to 2015.

A Merit Scholar of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Examination, Ghosh, whose research interest lies in wide range of areas including, Organic Petrology, Organic Geochemistry, Palaeoclimatic and Palaeodepositional reconstruction using Lipid Biomarkers & Stable Isotopic proxies, Petroleum Geochemistry, Kerogen and Bitumen Biochemistry also has laboratory expertise in Organic Geochemical Extraction, Column Chromatography etc.

Professor Ghosh also participated in a large number of conferences, seminars, symposia etc, including the 71st Meeting and Symposium of International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology at The Hague, Netherlands during 14th to 21st September 2019 and the Goldschmidt Conference 2017, Paris, France (Poster Presentation).
