Patna: A fresh political storm has erupted in Bihar after Independent MLA Pappu Yadav made controversial remarks alleging widespread exploitation of women in politics, triggering sharp reactions and reigniting debate over women’s safety and representation in public life.
Explosive Remarks Trigger Backlash
Yadav, known for his outspoken statements, claimed that exploitation of women has become “normalised” not just in politics but across various sectors. In a provocative assertion, he alleged that a majority of women are unable to sustain political careers without compromising in male-dominated power structures.
“Who is committing domestic violence? Who has evil eyes on women? From America to India, it is the politicians. 90% of women can’t do politics without entering the room of male politicians.
“In India, women are called goddesses, but they will never be respected here…90% of women cannot do politics without entering the room of politicians,” says Indian lawmaker Pappu Yadav pic.twitter.com/M6ORESNgCp

He further claimed that such incidents occur regularly and suggested that evidence of misconduct involving politicians frequently surfaces, calling it a “cultural problem” embedded in the system.
BJP Targets Congress Over Silence
The remarks quickly drew political fire, with the Bharatiya Janata Party launching an attack on the opposition, particularly the Indian National Congress, accusing it of maintaining silence on the issue.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised the Congress leadership, questioning its commitment to women’s empowerment. He took a swipe at Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, saying that leaders who advocate women-centric slogans have failed to respond to such controversial statements.
Poonawalla also alleged that the Congress and its allies have a history of opposing key legislative measures aimed at enhancing women’s representation, including the women’s reservation bill.
Debate Rekindled on Women’s Safety in Politics
The controversy has once again brought the spotlight on gender dynamics within Indian politics, with calls for accountability, stronger safeguards, and a more inclusive political environment. While Yadav’s remarks have drawn criticism for their sweeping nature, they have also sparked a broader conversation on the challenges faced by women in public life.
