KMC Issues Demolition Notices to 17 Properties Linked to Abhishek Banerjee

Kolkata: The political heat in West Bengal intensified after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) issued demolition notices to 17 properties allegedly linked to Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee over claims of unauthorised construction.

The notices, served under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, direct the owners to either demolish the disputed portions within seven days or explain why action should not be initiated against them.

According to civic officials, the KMC has sought documents related to sanctioned building plans and permissions allegedly obtained for additional constructions at the identified properties. Authorities have also asked for details regarding installations such as lifts and escalators.

One of the notices stated that the recipients must remove the “deviated unauthorised parts of the building” within seven days from the date of service or face demolition action by the civic body.

Properties Spread Across South Kolkata

The 17 properties reportedly include residential and organisational addresses linked to Abhishek Banerjee, members of his family, and his company, Leaps and Bounds Private Limited.

The properties are located across several prominent areas of South Kolkata, including Harish Mukherjee Road, Kalighat Road, Premendra Mitra Sarani, Panditiya Road and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani.

The civic body further warned that if satisfactory responses are not submitted within the stipulated period, demolition proceedings would be initiated and the expenses recovered from the owners concerned.

Suvendu Adhikari Raises Corruption Allegations

The development came shortly after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari claimed that he had directed officials to gather details of properties linked to four senior TMC leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee.

Adhikari alleged that 14 properties are registered under Leaps and Bounds Private Limited, while four are allegedly in Abhishek Banerjee’s name and six in the name of his father.

The BJP leader also named several others, including Raju Naskar of Beleghata, Sona Pappu of Kasba and the son of former minister Javed Khan, while referring to the number of properties allegedly connected to them.

Adhikari asserted that the BJP would continue pursuing legal action against individuals accused of corruption.

Referring to the recent arrests of Kolkata Police officer Shantanu Sinha Biswas and former minister Sujit Basu, he said the BJP intended to ensure that “all the corrupt people” are brought to justice through legal means.

TMC Yet to Respond Officially

Meanwhile, Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh said the municipality would examine allegations of illegal construction wherever complaints were received and issue notices if necessary.

He added that the legal status of the disputed structures would ultimately have to be established by the concerned property owners.

The latest development has triggered fresh political confrontation in West Bengal, with the BJP intensifying its attacks on the TMC leadership ahead of a potentially prolonged legal and political battle over alleged irregularities in property ownership and construction.
