Production Disrupted Across Major Units at BSL; Estimated Loss Touches ₹30 Crore a Day, Industrial Safety Concerns Mount

Bokaro: A blockade that has choked every entry gate of the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has brought its production machinery to a grinding halt, triggering a major industrial crisis. As displaced persons intensify their agitation, operations across key production units have been paralysed, piling up estimated losses of ₹30 crore a day and raising concerns over industrial safety. With workers stranded inside the sprawling facility and normal operations disrupted, pressure is mounting on the state administration to break the deadlock before the crisis deepens further.

According to the production report available on October 17, operations have been suspended across major production units, including the Blast Furnaces, Sinter Plant and Steel Melting Shops (SMS-I and SMS-II). The disruption is estimated to be costing the plant around ₹30 crore per day, with losses likely to rise if the deadlock continues.

Critical Operations Under Strain

The shutdown has raised serious concerns given the complex and highly sensitive nature of steel manufacturing. The plant’s operations involve high-temperature processes, molten metal and industrial gases, all of which require continuous technical supervision and strict adherence to safety protocols.

BSL also has an extensive network of industrial gas pipelines that demands round-the-clock monitoring and security. The blockade has made it increasingly challenging to maintain routine operations and ensure the uninterrupted execution of critical safety procedures.

Workers Stranded Inside Plant

The crisis has also left several employees and workers stranded inside the plant premises for more than 18 hours, according to the information provided. With entry and exit routes blocked, those inside are reportedly facing difficulties in accessing basic necessities, including food and drinking water.

Despite prolonged duty hours, physical exhaustion and difficult working conditions, the personnel present inside the facility are continuing to discharge essential responsibilities while attempting to maintain safety standards.

No Incident Reported, but Risks Remain

No gas leak or industrial accident has been reported so far. However, the prolonged disruption has heightened concerns over the challenges of maintaining effective surveillance of sensitive industrial systems and ensuring compliance with established safety procedures.

Any further delay in restoring normal access could place additional pressure on essential monitoring arrangements and complicate efforts to maintain operational safety across the sprawling industrial complex.

Management Seeks State Intervention

The Bokaro Steel Plant management and the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) have appealed to the state administration to intervene and help restore normalcy. They have urged the authorities to ensure that all entry gates are reopened and made fully functional, preferably by the night of October 17, so that employees can resume their duties and plant operations can return to normal.

With production halted, financial losses mounting and workers facing prolonged disruption, an early resolution of the standoff has become crucial for restoring industrial activity and safeguarding the plant’s critical infrastructure.
